Guess Who's Coming To The DW Next Meeting?

Here’s something else to look forward to at our next meeting!

We will have several special guests from the Democratic Women of North Carolina at our June meeting at Laura’s. (I’m sure it’s on your calendar--Saturday, the 11th, 3:00-5:30 pm.).  Joining us for a good time at the lake will be Sarah Anderson, President; Joan Dressler, Vice-President; and Pat Hawkins, Regional Director. Each of them will share some of their experiences with Democratic Women statewide, and it will be such a pleasure to welcome them to Person County. The “meeting” part of the meeting will start at 4:00 pm, so be sure to be there then. Look for directions and other details from Laura soon.

True blue,
Ellen

Osama Bin Laden Killed!

WOW!!

What great news from President Obama in a rather surprised speech tonight from the White House.  The president said having received word from US Intelligence that they had good evidence of where Bin Laden was he authorized them to do what was necessary to capture or kill him.  Well, with US Intelligence being "The absolute BEST" they got the job done without one single American killed.  As you could imagine Bin Laden's people tried to resist resulting in exchange of gun fire but the results show that the US forces were too much for Bin Laden and his people.

It is amazing to see Americans outside the White House celebrating the 'GOOD NEWS".  I am sure that many families who lost loved ones in the attacks at the World Trade Center, the field in Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon would be very relieved at this news as for many it brings closure to their lost.

As we all celebrate and or breed a sigh of relief at Osama Bin Laden's death let us continue to pray for our soldiers that are still fighting wars particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan.

More Charter Schools Coming To NC!

NC GOP Senate leaders approved a bill that would increase the number of charter schools in the state.  The bill passed largely along party lines vote.  Democrats are against the bill and rightly so when you consider the effects increased Charter schools will have on public school across the state.

Visit WRAL to read about it:  http://www.wral.com/news/state/nccapitol/video/9419473/

What does this mean for public schools?  Beyond a shadow of a doubt, public schools will lose money resulting in more budget cuts on top of what school districts across the state already face.  Public school teachers better get ready to "face the music" of further lay offs, larger class sizes, and even less classroom resources, thanks to the GOP.

Precinct Meeting Notification!

Hello, Democrats!

As many of you know, precinct meetings are held at this time of year.  The dates set for this year are Feb. 26-March 11.  If you would like to organize your precinct, please reply and I will send you the materials that you need.

Initially I was interested in seeing if we could organize all 14 precincts, but upon further thought, I am much more interested in finding Democrats who really want to be involved.  While Precinct Chairs and ViceChairs are members of the Executive Committee, rarely if ever has a Precinct officer participated in the Executive Committee.  What we do need is ACTIVE members of the Executive Committee, active Democrats who want to be engaged in building the Party, and taking action on issues.

So here are some opportunities to be involved:
1.    Contact any and all Democrats in your precinct and see who would like to be involved and how.  If you reach people who want to participate, get them together to organize/elect officers who will attend the Executive Committee meetings and be active in the Party.

2.    Come to a meeting at 7 pm Tues, Feb 8, to plan a calling and program strategy, offering Democrats a variety of ways to be involved.  Come help with the planning.  Email me if you want to come; I will be notifying everyone Monday about the location.

3.    We are planning to put on a public program in March in which Sen. Kinnaird and perhaps Rep. Wilkins (I hope!) will brief us on the situation and issues in the legislature.  We will also be discussing this meeting on Tues.  Come and help put on this program!

Organizing precincts is important if we're using it as a way to reach Democrats and offer them something---opportunities to be involved in issues they care about.  Please consider how you can also participate!!!

Thank you!
